Celebrating 30 Years at the 3M Centre: A Legacy of Sport Medicine

For 30 years, the 3M Centre at Western University has been home to Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic — a place where athletes, students and members of our community have come to recover from injury, stay active and get back to doing what they love.

But Fowler Kennedy’s story began long before we moved into the 3M Centre.

Our history is rooted in decades of sport medicine in London and at Western, shaped by pioneering physicians, physiotherapists, educators and researchers who helped establish the collaborative approach to care that continues to define Fowler Kennedy today.

As we celebrate 30 years at the 3M Centre, we are also celebrating the people, places and history that brought us here.

Before Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic

Part of our story begins with the J.C. Kennedy Athletic Injuries Clinic, named for Dr. J.C. Kennedy, a pioneer in orthopaedic surgery and sport medicine.

The clinic became an important centre for the treatment of athletic injuries in London. In 1990, University Hospital officially took over management of the J.C. Kennedy Athletic Injuries Clinic.

At the same time, sport medicine had deep roots at Western University, where a collaborative program served athletes and the university community from Thames Hall.

These programs and the people behind them helped lay the foundation for what would eventually become Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic.

A New Home and a New Chapter

Thirty years ago, that history entered an exciting new chapter.

With the move into the 3M Centre at Western University, the programs came together and the Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic emerged under the leadership of Dr. Peter J. Fowler.

The Fowler Kennedy name represented the legacies of two physicians who helped shape sport medicine in London and beyond, while the new space provided an opportunity to bring different areas of expertise together in one collaborative environment.

The move wasn’t simply about a new building or a new name. It represented the beginning of a new era.

And for the next three decades, the 3M Centre would become synonymous with Fowler Kennedy.

30 Years of Care, Collaboration and Comebacks

A lot can happen in 30 years.

Thousands of patients have walked through our doors. Generations of Western Mustangs have competed, been injured, rehabilitated and returned to play. Students have become alumni. Learners have become practitioners. Treatments have advanced, research has evolved and our team has continued to grow.

Through all that change, our purpose has remained the same: helping people stay active and return to the activities that matter to them.

Today, Fowler Kennedy’s interdisciplinary approach brings together professionals  to provide collaborative, patient-centred care.

Whether someone is competing at an elite level, representing the Western Mustangs, participating in recreational sport or simply trying to move without pain, every patient who enters our doors become part of the Fowler Kennedy story.

More Than a Clinic

Our home at the 3M Centre has also allowed Fowler Kennedy to remain deeply connected to Western University.

For over 30 years, we have had the privilege of supporting Western students and student-athletes, working alongside Mustang Athletics and contributing to the education and development of future health-care professionals.

That connection has helped make Fowler Kennedy more than a place where injuries are treated.

It is a place where care, sport, education and research come together.

The knowledge gained here extends beyond our clinic walls as professionals learn from one another, students gain experience and new generations carry that knowledge into their own careers.

The People Behind 30 Years

Buildings provide a home, but people create a legacy.

Over the past three decades at the 3M Centre — and throughout the many years that came before — Fowler Kennedy has been shaped by dedicated physicians, physiotherapists, , massage therapists, nurses, administrative staff, researchers, learners and countless others.

It has been strengthened by our relationships with Western University, Western Mustangs, our health-care partners, donors and the broader London community.

And most importantly, it has been built on the trust of our patients.

Behind every appointment is a person who is looking  to get back to — a field, a rink, a court, a workplace, a favourite activity or simply everyday life.

Helping people make those comebacks has been at the heart of Fowler Kennedy for generations.

Honouring Where We’ve Been. Looking Forward to What’s Next.

Thirty years in the 3M Centre is an important milestone, but it represents just one chapter in a much longer story.

From the early days of sport medicine at Western and the legacy of the J.C. Kennedy Athletic Injuries Clinic, to the leadership of Dr. Peter J. Fowler and the creation of Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic, our history has always been one of innovation, collaboration and a commitment to better patient care.

Today, we are proud to carry that legacy forward.

As we look toward the next 30 years, we remain committed to advancing sport medicine, educating future health-care professionals, strengthening our partnerships and helping people of all levels stay active and healthy.

To everyone who has been part of our story — our patients, staff, alumni, learners, partners, Western Mustangs, donors and the Western and London communities — thank you.

You have helped make Fowler Kennedy what it is today.

Here’s to 30 years at the 3M Centre, the decades of history that brought us here and the next chapter of Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine.
