Dr. Fischer has been a sport medicine physician, educator, leader, researcher and advocate in sport medicine for over 30 years.
She started at the FKSMC in 1987 as a physiotherapist. She then completed her medical training and joined the clinic as a physician in 1995. During her tenure, she oversaw the development of the Fanshawe satellite clinic then accepted the role of Director of primary care sport and exercise medicine and held that title for 15 years.
She has been an associate professor in the Departments of Family Medicine and Health Sciences at Schulich school of medicine and dentistry at Western University and has been granted Emerita status.
Dr. Fischer has held leadership roles in numerous provincial and national organizations to advance the specialty and educational training in sport medicine. These include roles as director of the PGY3 SEM program at Western, chair of the OMA section of sport medicine president of CASEM, chair of the CCFP SEM committee and clinician educator in competence with the CCFP. Her efforts were instrumental in having sport and exercise medicine recognized nationally as an area of special competence with the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
Dr. Fischer developed a special interest in sport concussion and has collaborated with multidisciplinary professionals and organizations to enhance education and research in the field, including the Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation, Ontario Brain Institute, and the Canadian Concussion Network.
Dr. Fischer’s true passion is patient care and she is committed to using her medical expertise to “keep people active”.
