How has the Fowler Kennedy Physiotherapy Sport Fellowship community & network supported your growth beyond the program?
The Fowler Kennedy team has prepared me for licensing, certifications, and supported my interest in additional education. I’ve been able to observe other therapists, sport medicine physicians, and orthopaedic surgeons.
This has furthered my knowledge and improved patient care. The network of professionals through FKSMC has helped shape my career and opened doors that would have otherwise not been available.
What was a defining moment during your fellowship that helped shape the way you practice as a Physiotherapist?
Career development is not a linear progression. During my fellowship I was unsuccessful in completing an important exam. This challenged my confidence in my abilities and whether I belonged in a sport medicine setting. Being surrounded by multiple mentors allowed me to obtain foundational knowledge, practice skills and develop confidence. This setback and the guidance I received, helped shape my approach to working with athletes and how to handle their challenges. Being a PT fellow includes having a team of peers to pick you up, even when you aren’t playing your best.
What would you tell someone who is thinking about applying for the fellowship?
The fellowship experience teaches physiotherapists about sports, orthopaedics, and how to work within an interdisciplinary team. It also teaches therapists about what they value in their work life, and whether this is congruent with a career in sport. The knowledge, coverage hours and
professional connections that are earned within the fellowship, accelerates career opportunity. Growth and change do not coexist.
