What is your role in supporting the sport physiotherapy fellows throughout their fellowship, and what do you enjoy most about it?
My role is to help guide and support the fellows throughout their fellowship journey, both clinically and professionally. I work to create an environment that encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and continuous growth, while providing mentorship and feedback that helps them develop confidence in their decision-making. Part of that role is also helping fellows navigate challenges, identify opportunities for development, and prepare for the next stages of their careers.
What I enjoy most is seeing the transformation that occurs over the course of the fellowship. Watching fellows evolve into confident, independent clinicians and future leaders in sport physiotherapy is incredibly rewarding. I enjoy helping them recognize their strengths, expand their perspectives, and develop the skills needed not only to provide excellent patient care, but also to contribute to the profession through leadership, education, and mentorship of others.
How would you describe the learning environment and culture within the fellowship?
The learning environment at Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic is collaborative, supportive, and focused on excellence. Fellows learn within a multidisciplinary team of physiotherapists, physicians, surgeons, and researchers, creating a rich environment for clinical learning and professional growth.
The culture encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and open discussion, while maintaining a strong commitment to evidence-informed practice and high-quality patient care. Fellows are supported by experienced mentors but are also given increasing autonomy, helping them build confidence, leadership skills, and clinical independence.
What stands out most is the genuine investment in each fellow’s development and the shared commitment to helping them become outstanding clinicians and future leaders in sport physiotherapy.
What advice would you give someone who is thinking about applying for the fellowship?
My advice would be to approach the fellowship with an open mind and a willingness to challenge yourself. The experience offers incredible opportunities to learn from experts, collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, and work with a wide variety of athletes and complex cases.
Be curious, ask questions, seek feedback, and take advantage of every learning opportunity available. The fellows who get the most out of the experience are often the ones who fully immerse themselves in the environment and embrace both the challenges and the opportunities for growth.
Most importantly, come prepared to learn, not just about sport physiotherapy, but about yourself as a clinician and future leader in the profession. The fellowship can be a truly transformative experience if you’re willing to invest in it.
