Corporate Sponsorship Opportunity for the Primary Care Sport Medicine Fellowship ProgramWhat is this opportunity? The Primary Care Sport Medicine division of the Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic is seeking a corporate partner to assist with the financial aspects of providing a rewarding and valuable educational opportunity - the Primary Care Sport Medicine Fellowship. The Primary Care Sport Medicine Fellowship provides an opportunity for a fully licensed Physician to further develop and enhance their expertise and knowledge in the area of Sport Medicine. Our program is one of the longest running Sport Medicine Fellowship programs in Canada. Over the past 10 years fourteen Physicians have participated in the program and have successfully completed the Diploma in Sport Medicine exam offered by the Canadian Academy of Sport Medicine. These Physicians are leaders in the Sport Medicine Community and have spread their expertise across Canada (see attached list). The Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic offers fellowship opportunities to practicing physicians and physiotherapists. A Fellowship Program is a one year educational opportunity designed to enhance the expertise and knowledge of health care professionals in the area of Sport Medicine. The knowledge gained through participation in the fellowship program will benefit other centres across Canada. A gift to the Fellowship Program will help defray the cost of this outstanding educational opportunity. There is a needAs the activity level of Canadians continues to increase, so too does the incidence of injury. The demand for Physicians with specialization in the prevention, diagnosis and management of sport or activity related injuries is greater than ever. Recent information revealed the following statistics:
Your gift of $30,000 per year will be used to defray the cost of providing an outstanding educational experience for a Physician interested in Sport Medicine (see financial information attached). As a corporate sponsor your company name will be included in all literature that refers to the Fellowship ie. (corporate name) Primary Care Sport Medicine Fellowship. This may include recruitment ads, workshops, lectures, research activities, publications, certificates, etc. Our corporate sponsor will also be recognized by a wall plaque that will be mounted in the Primary Care area of the Clinic. This plaque will be visible to all patients visiting our medical clinics (estimated 20,000 visits in 1997/98). Primary Care Sport Medicine Fellowship Program OutlineClinicalFor the initial four to eight weeks of the program the Fellow works in an observational capacity working closely with one of the Clinic's Primary Care Sport Medicine Physicians. After this introduction to the program, the Fellow establishes their own case load and will see patients for several half days each week. The Fellow is also scheduled to work in a clinical capacity with one of the Clinic's Orthopaedic Surgeons to gain appreciation for the surgeons' management of sport and activity related injuries. In addition, the Fellow schedules time throughout the year to observe the work performed by other clinic staff including, physiotherapists, kinesiologists, pedorthists and radiologists. At the completion of the program the Fellow is expected to have a thorough understanding of sport injury assessment, treatment and rehabilitation. In addition, the Fellow is expected to sit for the Diploma examination in Sport Medicine offered by the Canadian Academy of Sport Medicine. Personal ResearchThe Fellow is required to get involved in an area of sport medicine research. A research proposal outline must be presented to the Director of Primary Care Sport Medicine within the first two months of the Fellowship. The objective is to write a paper for publication by the end of the Fellowship. The Clinic provides access to computers, research data and access to labs and specialized resources (ie. the Exercise and Pregnancy Lab) through the School of Kinesiology in the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences. Audit opportunities are also available in a variety of courses in the School of Kinesiology (ie. Athletic Injuries). Experiential LearningThis element of the program is self-directed. The Fellow is expected to analyze their own activity level and exercise regime. If the Fellow is not presently involved in any physical activities, this is an opportunity to establish a reasonable schedule for regular exercise. Varsity Sport CoverageThe Fellow will be appointed as Team Physician to one or more University of Western Ontario Varsity Teams and should be available for event coverage. The Fellow will provide medical coverage for a number of Intercollegiate teams for the season including football/hockey/rugby. Community ServiceThe City of London has a number of semi-pro teams and a very active population. The Centre for Activity and Aging provides an opportunity for the Fellow to get more involved with the mature athlete. The Hand and Upper Limb Centre (HULC) at St. Joseph's Health Centre offers further areas to develop and further expand the experience. The Fellow must also assist with various special events which the Clinic gets involved with each year. The London Marathon for example, is a consistent component of the Fellowship Program. The Fellow is involved in a senior administrative position in the organization of this event. Other events include The Labatt 24 Hour Relay, Three-on-Three Basketball events as well as a number of Regional, Provincial and National Championships which are held in London each year.
