Radiology

The Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic is equipped with one German-mode siemens Multix general use unit and a GE XRD digital unit. They emit very low dose exposures compared to the average, based on annual H.A.R.P. testing.

The Radiology suite is in the process of replacing film with digital images. These images willbe viewed on a computer monitor and offer many advantages to the referring physician. Physicians can manipulate the contrast and density to better look at soft tissues and bone and magnify images electronically without having to re-expose the patient.

Our facility was an alpha test site for the Kodak IML film in current use and now in full production. Developed for orthopaedic use it's dual emulsion was designed with a new anticrossover light barrier between emulsions. This give both high bone detail and good soft tissue delineation.

As an extension of the Radiology Department of the University Campus at the London Health Sciences Centre this unit is staffed by a small core of Medical Radiation Technologists and an on-site Radiologist. We provide services to the Primary Care Physicians and Orthopaedic Surgeons allowing general radiological exams to be conveniently obtained at the time of the initial visit such as musculoskeletal, chest and abdomen. Patients may then be seen immediately with their examinations as desired by their doctor and any further projections may be obtained to aid in diagnosis as required. The nature of this setup has allowed for the development of more unique approaches and projections tailored to sports medicine problems.

We also provide our service to the students, employees and Staff Health Services for the University of Western Ontario.

What does all this mean for our patients? State-of-the-art equipment that provides a safe, and immediate radiological exam for the physician. The availability of this equipment eliminates the need for patients to travel to other facilities for this service and in many cases eliminates the need for a follow up visit with the physician.
