Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy is directed at identifying the underlying source(s) of pain
and\or dysfunction (assessment), providing relief of symptoms by the use
of appropriate hydrotherapy, electrotherapy and exercise (treatment),
and the recovery of normal function through therapeutic and functional
exercise (rehabilitation).
The Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic employs six full-time and two
part-time Registered Physiotherapists, as well as providing one Physiotherapy
Fellowship. Physiotherapists are assisted by Kinesiology (Sport Medicine)
students, High School Co-op. placement students, and volunteers from faculties
other than Kinesiology. As well, the Fowler Kennedy Physiotherapists supervise
six year-three and year-four physiotherapy students throughout the course
of the calendar year.
The new facility (1996) contains the following:
- thirty ft., two-lane hydrotherapy pool (one lane four feet deep
and one lane six feet deep)
- hot and cold whirlpool baths
- two stairmasters
- four bicycle ergometers/li>
- four station S.A.B.A pulley system
- B.A.P.S. board, FITTER, and K.A.T. proprioceptive retrainer
- three EXCEL-3 ultrasound/electrotherapy units
- VARAPULSE galvanic stimulator
- VECTORDYNE TWO interferential current
- Biofeedback, T.E.N.S., E.M.S.
- traction therapy
- CYBEX II and CYBEX 6000 dynamometers
- slide-board
- gym mats and gym balls
Each
patient referred for physiotherapy (patients may directly access physiotherapy
services) is thoroughly assessed and treated at the initial visit (forty-five
minutes). As well, the patient is provided with a specific home program
of therapeutic and functional exercise.
The cost of the initial assessment is $80.00 dollars. Follow-up treatment
appointments are fifteen minutes of direct contact time, as well as exercise.
The follow-up visits are $50.00 dollars. Upon discharge, patients are
provided with direction for an ongoing maintenance exercise program.
