Critical Mass of Expertise
Health research is becoming more sophisticated as new discoveries are made at an ever- increasing pace, frequently as a result of multidisciplinary collaboration. The emphasis in health research is shifting towards cohesive teams of basic and applied researchers who can bring together the resources, facilities and interdisciplinary insights that effectively address the fast pace and complexity of today’s health problems.
The University of Western Ontario and London Health Sciences Centre are privileged to claim national and international status in Orthopaedics Care, Research and Education.
Leading the Way
Many of components with world-class linkages are already in place, with strong research programs and exceptional clinician-scientists with international stature in joint replacement and musculoskeletal research. Sandy’s legacy will be the continuation of a clinical and research resource that will serve as a national and international centre of expertise. Support for the Dr. Sandy Kirkley Chair and Centre in Musculoskeletal Research affords an exceptional opportunity to demonstrate leadership, vision and commitment to the development of new opportunities for faculty, students and patients by:
- Modeling an integrated, multidisciplinary approach to the management of acute and chronic orthopaedic conditions.
- Cultivating collaborative linkages with allied health professionals, physicians, surgeons, and scientists in related disciplines and subspecialties.
- Presenting a locus of leadership aligned with systematic research and clinical trials that translates to a “bench to bedside” continuum of care for patients.
When Sandy died in September 2002, there were at least 21 research projects in progress under her guidance, and she had earned two major Senior Research Scholar and Investigative Awards from national granting agencies and won eight other awards for the quality of her research.
