Proven Leaders
Western and London Health Sciences Centre are privileged to support truly gifted faculty members and clinicians who represent the varied disciplines of orthopaedics, and who have a history of long service to the University, the Health Sciences Complex, the community and the country. It is among these distinguished individuals that the holder of the Kirkley Chair will encourage cohesive teams of researchers who can bring together the resources, facilities and interdisciplinary insights that effectively address the complexity of orthopaedic conditions. A few examples among this complement are:
- Dr. Peter Fowler – is Medical Director of the Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic and is internationally acclaimed for his excellence as an orthopaedic surgeon. He is the President of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and has led medical teams at many Commonwealth and Olympic Games.
- Dr. Robert Bourne - is the current Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery and a world-renowned orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in total hip and knee replacement surgery. Surgeons travel from around the world to study with Dr. Bourne and his colleague, Dr. Rorabeck. He is a past President of the Hip Society and the Canadian Orthopaedic Research Society and current Director of the Ontario Joint Replacement Registry. In May 2000, Dr. Bourne was proudly inducted into the Hip Hip Hooray Hall of Fame.
- Dr. Cecil Rorabeck - is Professor and former Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery at Western and London Health Sciences Centre He is the current President of the Knee Society. Dr. Rorabeck holds two patented inventions and has collaborated with Dr. Bourne and others on the Ontario Joint Replacement Registry, a province-wide program focused on improving access to the results of joint replacement surgery.
- Dr. Robert Litchfield - is an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Western, and a surgeon for the Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic. His clinical and research interests include disorders of the shoulder and athletic injuries to the knee. Dr. Litchfield is the Surgical Director of the Arthoscopic and Orthopaedic Learning Centre, a national resource for surgical innovation and training.
- Dr. Jeffrey Dixon - is Director of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Group in Skeletal Development and Remodeling. His research area of expertise includes the cellular physiology of bone and cartilage. The Group is part of a larger program of basic, applied and clinical research in musculoskeletal health at Western, and as such, routinely interacts with colleagues in orthopaedics.
