The history of the now, Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic, began with the opening of the "Athletic Injuries Clinic" on September 30, 1974. Located in the basement of Thames Hall, on The University of Western Ontario Campus, this small clinic would ultimately become one of the leading sport medicine operations in North America. The opening of the "Athletic Injuries Clinic" in 1974, was made possible through the generosity of the Honourable Ray Lawson and Family.

By 1992 the Clinic had outgrown its existing space. In 1993 a plan for an $8.8 million expansion to the Faculty of Kinesiology was approved. This expansion would include the construction of a 16,000 square foot facility soon to be named the Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic.

The fund raising campaign was in full swing by the spring of 1994 with both London Health Sciences Foundation, Foundation Western and The University of Western Ontario working together to ensure the success of the project. Contributions came from corporations, foundations, individuals, keen sport enthusiasts, patients of the Clinic and suppliers to both institutions. As well, there was strong support from the Kinesiology and Sport Medicine family of staff and volunteers.

The most successful teams in sport usually have a strong leader. In the case of the Sport Medicine Campaign the leader was 3M. 3M's team spirit was exemplified by a gift of $1 million. In recognition of their support, the complex was named the 3M Centre in their honor. 3M Healthcare has been a partner with London Health Sciences Centre for many years. 3M Orthopaedic Products Canada also made a generous contribution early in the campaign and was recognized with the naming of the Clinic's casting room. In addition to having the 3M logo prominently displayed on the building, a plaque, displayed in the foyer of the 3M Centre reads,
